Heribert Tenschert’s love of fine books and his interest in literature and art history made the choice of his future vocation almost inevitable. Upon completing his studies of German and Romance languages and literatures, he and his wife Helga founded an antiquarian book shop in the Bavarian village of Rotthalmünster at the end of 1977. His first catalogue "Ästhetik des neueren Buchs" published in the same year clearly showed his attitude as a rare book dealer: to regard old books as works of art in their own right. Aspects like typography, illustrations, the quality of the paper or vellum, the art of binding, preservation and provenance are acknowledged as much as the literary and historical significance of the text.
Our primary mission is to give collectors competent advice for building up their collections. As a direct corollary of this focus we attach great importance to the scientific descriptions of our books as well as to place them into a sociocultural and art historical context. These efforts have been very fruitful: by now 45 catalogues and several much-noticed entrances on the international stage of the rare book and art trade have earned Heribert Tenschert world wide recognition within a few years.

In 1993, Mr. Tenschert moved his head office to Bibermühle near Stein am Rhein in the northern part of Switzerland where he had already played an important part in the founding of an antiquarian book business in 1983. Since 1998, the company is housed in the carefully renovated barn of the historic Bibermühle on the banks of the Rhine river.

Jewels of the book market are the primary focus of our business: the beautifully illustrated and scientifically researched catalogue series "Leuchtendes Mittelalter" presents illuminated manuscripts from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance to an international public of collectors and scholars. In the present nine volumes, more than 350 manuscripts are described and represented in a thorough manner, probably unique for catalogues of the antiquarian book trade. In addition we continue to publish outstanding catalogues of other important rare books such as early or illustrated incunabula and illustrated books from all periods, especially the masterpieces of French 18th century engraving. Books printed on vellum, beautiful bindings from the last six centuries as well as modern artist-books and private press books round out our offerings. Our new series "Illuminationen" consists of profusely illustrated art-historical monographs which introduce special treasures from our stock. Written by internationally recognized experts, they are intended to provide a forum for publications in the still limited research of book art and illustration. In view of the growing interest in illuminated manuscripts we have recently published our first facsimile edition. It is our intention to continue making outstanding manuscripts available as high quality facsimilia in limited editions. You will find further information about our publications under the heading catalogues & publications.

We are always interested in acquiring whole collections or individual works of singular importance in our areas of special expertise. If you have a collection of rare books we would be pleased to make you an offer without obligation. In addition, we offer expert advice and valuations for single items as well as libraries or estates.

We regularly present high quality selections of our unique stock at the most important rare book and fine art & antique fairs in Europe and the United States. The latest dates and more information are listed in the fair calendar. We would be delighted to welcome you at our booth.

You may contact us at the following address and telephone number from Monday to Friday between 9 am and 5 pm. Visitors are always welcome, though only by appointment.
